He was the son of Frederick and Rose Hollis of “Birchlands”, West Byfleet, Surrey. Charles was the fiancée of Marjorie Peregrine, the daughter of the Reverend D. W. Peregrine, Vicar of Branston by Belvoir, Leics. He was educated at Haileybury College, Hertfordshire and Sandhurst Military Academy. He was hit by a bullet and killed whilst returning to his trench, having lead two platoons after all the other officers had been killed. His Military Cross was won at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. He was known as Derrick.
