ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. On Saturday May 22nd 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” – Gunner H. J. Parks, of the 62nd Battery R.F.A., has written the following letter in regard to the death of Br. George Ide, 62nd Battery R.F.A., whose sister resides at 112, Berners Street: “I sincerely regret to tell you that George was killed in action on May 9th. He was helping the gunners replenishing ammunition, and he with seven other men were killed by a shell. He died a soldiers death, and duty was his watchword. The battery have lost a good soldier and a good comrade; he was my best friend – a braver man was hard to find. I am sorry I cannot send better news to you, but if I get a chance I will avenge his death.”
