He was the son of Alfred Springthorpe of Leics., and the husband of Harriet Spencer (formerly Springthorpe) of 4, Craven Street, Leicester. The War Diary for the 27th July records that the Battalion relieved the 9th Bn. Suffolk Regiment in the front line. The entry for the 29th July records:- Quiet. Casualties 1 killed (D Company), 1 wounded (C Company).
