Son of William Henry and Ethel Herbert, of Leicester.

At the time of his death he was 19 and serving as an Air Gunner with 196 Squadron at RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire.

Killed whilst flying in Vickers Wellington X HE161 when the canvas bomb screen broke away and became lodged in an elevator during an air test causing the aircraft to crash near Middleton-on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire.
