An obituary in the Leicester Journal of 27 March 1863 reads:

Twyford- Our obituary contains a notice of the death of Mr. John Ryder, of this village, which took place on Saturday last. Mr Ryder served ten years in the 5th troop of the 1st Dragoon Guards, and was in the Household Brigade, consisting of the 1st Dragoons, Life Guards, and Blues, which covered the retreat upon Waterloo from Quatre Bras. He took part in the memorable charge of the Guards upon the French culrassiers and was surrounded by a number of them during the fray. Whilst fighting his way among them he was attacked in the rear by some Polish Lancers and received four sword wounds and a lance wound in his body. He still continued fighting until his horse was killed beneath him, when he fell to the ground, fainting from loss of blood and was left upon the field. Besides this memorable adventure, he had a narrow escape from being taken prisoner by the French advanced guard at Genappa. He was in receipt of a pension of 1s per day until his death. A sister and five brothers of Mr Ryder are still living. One of his brothers, who is 75 years old, received no less than eleven wounds in the same charge at Waterloo. There has not been a death in the family since about 1805.
