Albert was called up on 24th June, joining the 50th Holding Battalion, later renamed the 8th Battalion. He married Joan on 7th September 1940. The battalion (renamed the 1st) landed in Normandy on 3rd July 1944. He sent many letters home to his wife. The last was received on 22nd August 1944 and his wife became concerned; Joan wrote to the battalion in early October and was told that he had gone missing on patrol. His grave was revealed to the authorities in March 1945 by the villagers of Rocques.
"Albert was killed in action 23rd August 1944 at the crossroads in the village of Rocques 3km north of Liseiux, the day after the official date for the end of the battle of Normandy. He was the lead man of his section and entered a hedgerow into an orchard followed by a comrade and came under fire from the road junction on higher ground. The section withdrew and returned later to search for Albert but in vain. Local villagers had recovered his body and interred it in the cemetery at the crossroads where it lies today."
