He was the son of George Banks a Shoe Rivetter, born 1870 in Stone Staffordshire and his wife Florence, a Cigar Maker, born 1872 in Leicester. George Walter was born in 1897 in Leicester, his siblings were Horace Alfred, born 1893, Eva Elizabeth, born 1895, Florence Annie, born 1901, Hilda, born 1903, Ida, born 1905, Edna born 1908 and Frances May, born 1910, all his siblings were born in Leicester. In March 1901 the family home was at 192, Curzon Street, Leicester, this being situated within the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Matthew. In April 1911 George was employed as a Press Room Boy and was residing in the family home at 42, Meynell Road, Leicester, together with his parents and siblings, Eva, Florence, Hilda, Ida, Edna and Frances. His brother Horace Alfred also fell.
