He was the son of Oscar Barton a Shoe Trade Foreman, born 1856 in Leicester and his wife Martha, born 1857 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Walter was born in 1883 in Leicester, his siblings were Nellie, born 1847 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, Alice, born 1879 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, Ada, born 1881, Jessie, born 1885, Oscar, born 1886, Edgar, born 1889, Pattie, born 1890, Thomas, born 1893, Sydney, born 1896 and Mona, born 1899, the latter eight siblings were all born in Leicester. In April 1891 the family home was at 43, Headington Villa, Green Lane, Evington, Leicester, this being situated within the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Barnabas. In March 1901 Walter was employed as a Boot Clicker and was residing in the family home at 43, Green Lane Road, Leicester, this being situated within the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Stephen, together with his parents and siblings, Nellie, Alice, Ada, Jessie, Oscar, Edgar, Pattie, Thomas, Sydney and Mona. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a Boot Manufacturers Porter and was residing at 29, Arnold Street, Leicester together with his wife Annie, born 1886 in Leicester and their daughter, Grace Annie, born 1911 in Leicester. His widowed wife later remarried becoming Mrs A. Hepwell (formerly Barton) of 97, Charnwood Street, Leicester.
