He was the son of Thomas Carr, a Leicester Corporation general labourer, born 1863 in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire and his wife Sarah Carr (nee Davis, married on the 26th November 1892 in St. Barnabas’s Church, Leicester), born on the 24th December 1863 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Thomas was born in the 1st quarter of 1900 in Evington, Leicester, his siblings were, Richard, born on the 10th March 1893, Kate, born on the 28th April 1897 and Bertie, born on the 27th April 1898, all his siblings were born in Evington, in March 1901 the family home was at 21, 1, New Park Cottage, rear of Nottingham Road, Leicester. In April 1911 Thomas was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 19, London Street, North Evington, Leicester, together with his father, a general labourer, his mother and siblings, Richard, a needle maker, Kate, a schoolgirl, Bertie, a schoolboy, Charles Edward, born on the 15th July 1902 and George Reginald, born on the 2nd October 1906, the latter two siblings were born in Evington, Leicester.
Thomas’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, being allotted the service number 50072 and at some point was subsequently transferred as a Private to the 10th Battalion Essex Regiment, being allotted the service number 44733, it is unknown with which unit he first entered the theatre of war in France on a date unknown, but it would have been after the 31st December 1915. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 21 Sept-18 – YAK POST (B.HQ). Battalion Headquarters moved off at 12.00 midnight and the battle Headquarters were established at YAK POST. At 1.00am Companies commenced to move to their forming up positions. At 3.30am attacking Companies had formed up and dug themselves in. The barrage opened at 5.40am, and Companies advanced at 6.07am. “C” and “D” Companies on the right reached GRAFTON TRENCH. On the left “A” and “B” Companies got without 200 yards of TOMBOIS FARM. At this point the attack was held up by Machine Gun fire from the two flanks and from TOMBOIS FARM. Four of the Tanks had been put out of action and the remaining 3 had got too far in advance of the attacking troops to be of any assistance. By 2.00pm the Battalion was in the original front line. At 8.00pm the order was received to withdraw to the area around F.14 central. This move was completed by 10.00pm. A composite platoon under the Regimental Sergeant Major was left to garrison YAK POST.
On Wednesday 4th December 1918 The Leicester Daily Post published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” - News has been received that Pte. T. Carr, of the 10th Essex Battalion, died on or shortly after Sept. 21st from wounds received in action. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Carr, of 19, London-street, Leicester. He joined the army a year ago, and had been in France about five weeks. He was formerly employed at Messrs. Leeson and Sons, Limited.
