He was the son of John Farmer Clarke a solicitors clerk, born 1858 in Barkby, Leics., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1856 in Rearsby, Leics. Philip Oswald was born in 1886 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a brother Leonard W., born 1881 in Leicester, in April 1891 the family home was at 45, Earl Howe Street, Leicester. In March 1901 Philip was residing in the family home at 45, Earl Howe Street, Leicester, together with his parents and brother John Wilfrid, born 1893 in Leicester. In April 1911 Philip was employed as an elementary school teacher and was residing in the family home at 23, Melbourne Road, Leicester, together with his parents and brother John. In the October, November, December quarter of 1911, Philip married Frances Louise Brown in the Leicester marriage registration district. Philip was accidentally killed by a bomb. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggesston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour of former pupils, this records that Philip attended the school between the years 1898 and 1901. His grave lies against the south hedge in the churchyard. The War Diary entries for June 1916 records.
