He was the son of John Goode, a bricklayer’s labourer, born in the 3rd quarter of 1872 in Market Harborough, Leicestershire and his wife Blanche Palmer Goode, (nee Preston, married on the 11th October 1891 in St. Matthew’s Church, Leicester), born on the 22nd August 1873 in All Saint’s, Leicester and baptised on the 12th October 1873 in St. Margaret’s Church, Leicester. Horace Henry was born in the 1st quarter of 1899 in Leicester, his siblings were, John William, born on the 7th February 1892 and baptised on the 18th March 1892 in the Parish Church, Market Harborough, Frederick Palmer, born on the 15th June 1893 and baptised on the 23rd July 1893 in the Parish Church, Market Harborough and Hetty Blanche, born on the 22nd May 1895 and baptised on the 15th June 1895 in the Parish Church, Market Harborough, the latter three siblings were all born in Market Harborough and Clara Hannah, born in the 1st quarter of 1897 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 125, Sherard Road, Leicester. In April 1911 Horace was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 120, Bridge Road, North Evington, Leicester, together with his father, a boot trade packer, his mother and siblings, John, a shoe trade clicker, Fred, a shoe trade finisher, Blanche a cotton trade winder, Clara, a cotton trade winder, Nellie Coles, a schoolgirl, born on the 15th September 1901, Edith Annie, a schoolgirl, born on the 2nd February 1904, Sidney Edward, a schoolboy, born on the 28th December 1906 and Leonard De Quincey, born on the 10th January 1910, the latter four siblings were all born in Leicester. Horace had another sibling, Edna May, born on the 6th May 1914 in Leicester.
Horace’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, but from the few existing documents that are available in the public domain, it can be confirmed that he enlisted in Leicester, although it is unclear to which military unit he was first allocated. It can however be confirmed that he was posted to the 13th Training Reserve Battalion as a Private and allotted the service number 9068. He was then posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment and allotted the service number 41435. It is unknown when Horace first entered the theatre of war in France, however as he was not recorded on the medal rolls for the 1914-15 Star, it must be assumed that it was at some time after the 31st December 1915. On the 10th April, 1918 he was admitted to the 51st Field Ambulance suffering from myalgia and was transferred the same day to No.3 Canadian Stationary Hospital, he was recorded as serving with the 7th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. Nothing further is known of his military service until he was admitted to the 59th Casualty Clearing Station in France, where on the 11th September, 1918 he died from wounds received in action while serving with the 7th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was buried in Varennes Military Cemetery in France. Horace was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Horace’s mother was awarded a weekly Army Pension of six shillings for life, this was to commence on the 25th March 1919.
