He was the son of William Smith Cort, a leather merchant, born 1867 in Market Harborough, Leics., and his wife Hephzibah Cort (nee Kent, married in the 4th quarter of 1888 in the Market Harborough, Leics. district), born 1869 in Dunstable, Beds. Archibald Bernard was born on the 21st July 1898 in Market Harborough, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother William Percy, born 1891 in Market Harborough, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 8, Church Street, Market Harborough, Leics. In April 1911 Archibald was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 8, Church Street, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his father, a leather merchant, his mother who was assisting in the business and his brother William, a journalist, also residing with the family was his adopted sister, Hilda Lambert, a housekeeper, born 1889 in Drayton, Leics. Prior to enlisting, Archibald had been a student at Nottingham University. Archibald’s service record shows that he served as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in Reading, Berks, 18/9/16. 2 R.S., 24/11/16.
