He was the son of George Rawlings, and the husband of Violet Rawlings. The War Diary for the 1st to the 5th October 1918 records. 1st Oct Neuville-Bourjonval Battalion withdrew to huts at NEUVILLE. "A" Line Transport heavily shelled. Casualties 1 O.R. Killed 1 O.R. wounded 3 horses Killed and 3 horses wounded. Capt. FREDERICK WILLIAM BALLANCE, Lts ARTHUR JAMES FYSON and BERNARD LANCELOT PAVEY and 2Lts FRANK FLAVELL and WILLIAM HENRY THOMAS COTHILL joined Battalion for duty. [Comment; 2/Lt COTHILL KIA, Captain BALLANCE wounded and 2/Lt PAVEY sick- all on 23rd October]. 2nd Oct In huts as above. Day devoted to bathing & cleaning up. 3rd Oct As above. Training carried on.
4th to 5th Oct Training carried on as above.
