He was the son of Edward Taylor, a shoe trade packer, born on the 8th November 1868 in Belgrave, Leicester and baptised on the 15th June 1869 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave, Leicester (son of John Thomas Taylor, 1851 and Sarah Elizabeth Marratt, 1847) and his wife Alice Elizabeth Taylor (nee Humphreys, married in the July quarter of 1896 in the Wellingborough, Northamptonshire district), born on the 31st March 1870 in Dundalk, Louth, Ireland (daughter of William Humphreys, 1838-1892 and Alice Underwood, 1848-1921). Edward was born in the July quarter of 1899 in Rushden, Northamptonshire, also residing with the family was Edwards maternal aunt, Esther Harriett Humphreys, a dress maker, born on the 14th June 1872 in Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland, in March 1901 the family home was at 15, Fitzwilliam Street, Rushden, Northamptonshire.
In April 1911 Edward was residing in the family home at 61, Moat Road, St. Stephen’s, Leicester, together with his father, an engineering tool grinder, his mother, a cardboard box maker and brother John, born in the October quarter of 1901 in Rushden.
FAMILY NOTE: Edward also had two other siblings, twins, Harry and Horace born in the January quarter of 1903 in Northamptonshire, and who both died in the January quarter of 1903 in Northamptonshire.
Edward’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers.
