He was the son of Arthur Edward Amatt an Unbrella Maker, born 1871 in Leicester and his wife Clara, born 1869 in Leicester. Sydney Edward was born in 1895 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a brother George L., born 1898 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 4, Bismark Street, Leicester. The Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys published a Roll of Honour on the 31st January 1920, in which an entry appeared showing that he had been a pupil at the school from 1909 until 1910.
