He was the son of George Herbert Boyd a fire insurance surveyor and cashier, born 1863 in Salford, Lancs., and his wife Sarah Louisa, born 1864 in Fleetwood, Lancs. Charles Gordon was born in 1893 in Crumpsall, Lancs, his siblings were Thomas Fraser, born 1892 in Crumpsall, Lancs., and John Hardy, born 1900 in Romily, Ches.,, also living with the family was his widowed maternal aunt, Eliza Mary Wright, born 1870 in Liverpool, Lancs., in March 1901 the family home was at Westleigh, Whetstone Road, Blaby, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was a scholar and was residing in the family home at 13, Tavistock Drive, Bulwell, Notts., together with his father, now an insurance company district manager, his mother and siblings, Thomas and John, and his widowed maternal aunt Eliza. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour in which Charles is shown to have been a pupil at the school, he is not commemorated on the memorial standing in the grounds, but his name appears on the Roll of Honour inside the entrance foyer to the school.
