He was the son of Joseph Henson, a shoe maker’s sole sewer, born 7th January 1863 in Belgrave, Leicester and baptised on the 26th July 1863 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave and his wife Mary Ann Henson (nee Smith, married in the 4th quarter of 1887 in the Leicester district), born 1862 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. Henry John was born in the 4th quarter of 1893 in Belgrave, he had one sibling, a brother Joseph William, born 6th November 1888 in Belgrave, in March 1901 the family home was at 42, Dale Street, Leicester. In the 4th quarter of 1910 in the Leicester district, Henry’s mother died aged 48. In April 1911 Henry was employed as a grocer’s assistant and was residing in the family home at 32, Bridge Road, Leicester, together with his widowed father, a boot trade sole sewer, and siblings, Joseph, a grocer’s assistant and Beatrice Adeline Constance, a housekeeper, born 6th March 1890 in Belgrave. Henry’s father died in January 1948 in Leicester, aged 84.
Henry’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment, being allotted the service number 9542, and was posted as a Private to the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and with this unit he first entered the theatre of war in France on the 9th September 1914. He was awarded the 1914 STAR, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 8 Feb-15 - (Mon) RUE-DU-BOIS. Bombarded at 12.00 noon by field guns, 28 shells fired. Casualties 2 men wounded, a good deal of sniping at night.
On Saturday February 20th 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LEICESTERSHIRE AND THE WAR.” – Private Harry Henson (9542), A Company, 1st Leicestershire Regiment, aged 21, the son of Mr. Joseph Henson, 32, Bridge Road, was killed in action in France on February 8th.
On Thursday February 8th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – IN MEMORIAM. HENSON.- In loving memory of Pte. H. Henson, 1st Leicester’s, fell in France Feb. 8th 1915. O! grave, where is thy victory? Lizzie.
