He was the son of the late Mary Pallett, born 1866 in Keyham, Leicestershire and widower, Alfred Pallett, a coachman, born 1863 in Knighton, Leicester. Ernest’s mother died in the 1st quarter of 1900 in the Leicester district, aged 34. Ernest was born in the 4th quarter of 1893 in Keyham, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Charles, a boot trade heel builder, born 1886 in Keyham, Leicestershire, Leonard, a wood worker, born 1887 in East Bridgeford, Nottinghamshire, George, born 1892 in South Croxton, Leicestershire and Mabel, born 1896 in Keyham, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at 64, Victoria Road East, Leicester. In April 1911 Ernest was employed as a firewood labourer and was residing in the family home at 50, Forest Road, Leicester together with his father a gardener and his siblings, Leonard, a firewood labourer, George, a firewood labourer, Horace, a firewood labourer, born 1896, Richard a schoolboy, born 1899, Gladys, a schoolgirl, born 1901 and Minnie Rose M., born 1905, the latter four siblings were all born in Leicester, also residing with the family was Jane Tomblin, a widow, a cardboard box maker, born 1874 in Northampton.

On Friday August 6th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR” – CASUALTIES AMONG TERRITORIALS. The following casualties in the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment are reported from the Base under date July 18th:-
