Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of Charles Harry and Fannie Fairall. The 1911 census records, Charles Harry Fairall, married 17 years and head of the family, a Licenced Victualler, born 1873 in Great Bowden, Leics., and his wife Fannie, born 1875 in Great Wigston, Leics. The children were Harry Gustavaus, a Hotel Waiter, born 1895 in Leicester and Fannie, born 1906 in Leicester. The family were residing at 26, High Cross Street, Leicester. He died of influenza. The citation from the London Gazette dated 30th July 1919, records. “On the morning of September 28th 1918, during the operations around Pike Copse outpost of the Hindenburg Line, near Pontruet, he was sent with his platoon to reinforce the company on the right whose flank was in danger of being turned. In spite of the darkness and confusion, he threw back a defensive flank and succeeded in driving off two enemy attacks which were threatening the rear of our position. He showed great collness and initiative.” On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour of former pupils, this records that Harry attended the school between the years 1908 and 1909.
