He was the son of John Moore Cawthorn a woollen glove trade worker, born 1860 in Wigston Magna, Leics., and his wife Susannah L., a hosiery worker, born 1867 in Wigston Magna, Leics. Wilfrid was born in 1889 in Wigston Magna, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 48, Leicester Road, Wigston Magna, Leics. In March 1901 Wilfrid was residing in the family home at 28, Junction Road, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his parents and brother Lister Stanley, born 1896 in Wigston Magna, Leics. In April 1911 Wilfrid was employed as a shoe trade clicker and was residing in the family home at North Street, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his father, now a fish dealer, his mother and brother Lister. The War Diary entry for the events from the 1st to the 4th August 1916 records. TRENCHES, ARRAS. Enemy very inactive. Days passed quietly. The trenches need considerable work, they are very shallow and broad.
