He was the son of George Daff, an agricultural labourer, born 30th August 1850 in Little Bytham, Lincolnshire and was baptised on the 29th September 1850 in the Parish Church, Little Bytham and his wife Lucy Daff (nee Tryner, married on the 30th April 1878 in the Parish Church, Denton, Lincolnshire), born 12th July 1858 in Denton, Lincolnshire and baptised on the 1st August 1858 in the Parish Church, Denton. Richard Tryner was born in the 4th quarter of 1889 in Barkstone, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Christiana Mary, born 1879 in Denton and baptised on the 6th April 1879 in the Parish Church, Denton, Lucy Gertrude, born 1881 in Newark, Nottinghamshire and baptised on the 23rd January 1881 in the Parish Church, Denton, George Francis, born 1882 and John Robert, born 1884 and baptised on the 20th July 1884 in the Parish Church, Denton, the latter two siblings were both born in Pickworth, Lincolnshire, Albert, born 30th January 1885 in Easton, Lincolnshire and baptised on the 13th June 1885 in the Parish Church, Denton and Ernest William, born 1887 in Barkstone, in April 1891 the family home was at Main Street, Barkstone. On the 17th March 1897 Richard’s mother, died aged 38 in Burton Coggles, Lincolnshire. On the 5th March 1899 Richard’s father married Eliza Sandall in Commercial Road Methodist Chapel, Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire. Richard’s father died in on the 27th May 1900 from pulmonary tuberculosis and exhaustion, aged 49 and was interred on the 29th May 1900 in the Parish of St. Thomas’s, Burton Coggles. In March 1901 Richard was residing in Burton Coggles, this being the family home of his widowed step mother, Eliza Daff, born 1839 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands. In April 1911 Richard was absent from the family home in Burton Coggles, residing there was his widowed step mother, an old age pensioner, Richard was serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) and was stationed at Gough Barracks, Trimulgherry, Deccan, India. Richard also had the following siblings, Mary May, born 1st June 1892 in Barkestone, le Vale, Leicestershire, Lilian, born 25th February 1896 in Burton Coggles, and who died on the 26th February 1896.
Richard’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters), being allotted the service number 10780, and had been a pre war regular soldier, it is not known whether he had been mobilized from the Army Reserve or whether he was still serving at the time of the outbreak of war. He first entered the theatre of war in France on the 4th November 1914 with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment and was killed in action on the 11th March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle. He was awarded the 1914 STAR, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 11 Mar-15 – NEUVE CHAPELLE. 10:00am. “C” Company advanced North East through the orchard on the left of our line and occupied some broken down houses. Lieutenant WEIGALL killed in this advance. Weather fine but dull. Battalion shelled throughout the day by the enemy. “D” Company charge enemy’s breastworks but suffering heavy loss from machine gun fire is forced to abandon the enterprise. Captain STACKHOUSE and 2nd Lieutenant COXON killed, 2nd Lieutenant BURTON i/c Grenadiers and 2nd Lieutenant WATERS wounded. Captain HODGSON wounded early morning. Captain WEBB at midday. 2nd Lieutenant WEBSTER in afternoon and Major MORTIMORE at 4:30pm. Command now devolves on Major MORLEY. 12:00 midnight. Draft of 25 men join the Battalion.
