He was the son of George Baines a domestic usher, born 1855 in Edith Weston, Rutland and his wife Susan Baines (nee Lambert, married in the 4th quarter of 1892 in the Oakham, Rutland district), born 1871 in Empingham, Rutland. George was born in the 4th quarter of 1895 in Hambleton, Rutland, and was baptised on the 1st December 1895 in Hambleton, his half blood siblings were Herbert, a domestic gardener, born in the 2nd quarter of 1885 and who was baptised on the 17th June 1885 in Hambleton and Georgina Kate, born 1889 and baptised on the 3rd November 1889 in Hambleton, the latter two half blood siblings were both born in Hambleton, Walter Edward, born 1893 and baptised on the 6th May 1894 in Hambleton, Florence Ada, born 1894 and baptised on the 6th May 1894 in Hambleton, Arthur, born 1897 and baptised on the 4th April 1897 in Hambleton, Alice Mary, born 1898 and baptised on the 4th December 1898 in Hambleton and Clara, born 1900 and baptised on the 13th May 1900 in Hambleton, the latter five siblings were all born in Hambleton, in March 1901 the family home was at Hambleton. In April 1911 George was employed as a domestic garden boy and was residing in the family home at Upper Hambleton, together with his father, a domestic gardener, his mother and siblings, Arthur, a farm boy, Alice, a schoolgirl, Clara, a schoolgirl, Lovick, born 8th January1902 and baptised on the 6th April 1902 in Hambleton, Leonard, born 1903 and baptised on the 15th January 1905 in Hambleton, Edith Blanche, born 28th September 1904 and baptised on the 15th January 1905 in Hambleton and Wilfred, born 21st August 1907 and baptised on the 23rd August 1907 in Hambleton, the latter four siblings were all born in Hambleton. George’s father had previously been married to Jane Zillah Woodcock, whom he married in the 3rd quarter of 1876 in the Oakham, Rutland district, Jane was born in 1857 in Hambleton, they had the following children John Robert, born 1877 and baptised on the 27th May 1877 in Hambleton, George William, born 1880 and baptised on the 5th September 1880 in Hambleton, Ernest, born 1882 and baptised on the 30th August 1882 in Hambleton, Sarah Annie, born 1883 and baptised on the 17th June 1885 in Hambleton, Herbert, born 1885 and baptised on the 17th June 1885 in Hambleton, Mabel Ellen, born 1887 and Georgina Kate, born 1889 and baptised on the 3rd November 1889 in Hambleton, all the children were born in Hambleton, Jane died in the 1st quarter of 1892, aged 35 and was buried in Hambleton on the 23rd February. George was killed by a shell near Soissons, France, his half blood brother Herbert also fell in action.
George attested into the Army on a Short Service engagement (Three years with the Colours.) on the 2nd September 1914 in Kettering. He gave his place of birth as Hambleton, Oakham, Rutlandshire, his age as 19 years and his trade or calling as gardener. He gave his present home address as Rushton, Northamptonshire. He confirmed that he was unmarried. His record of service began when he joined the Depot of the Northamptonshire Regiment at Kettering as a Private, service number 14373 on the 2/9/14. Posted to the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on the 3/9/14. Transferred under the Authority of the 54th Infantry Brigade letter No.469b/100/14, to the Army Cyclist Corps, service number 3080, on the 24-26/12/14. Transferred to the 18th Divisional Company, Army Cyclist Corps on the 24/12/14. Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 26/7/15. Attached to the 18th Signal Company, Royal Engineers, on the 14/2/16. Joined 18th Divisional Signal Company, Royal Engineers, in the field on the 1/3/16. Posted to the XIII Company Army Cyclist Corps on the 11/5/16. Granted leave to the United Kingdom from the 16/12/16 - 26/12/16. Rejoined 13th Cyclist Battalion, in the field on the 28/12/16. Wounded in the field on the 10/11/17. Admitted to 17th East Lancashire Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to the neck and right wrist, in the field on the 10/11/17. Transferred to the 36th Casualty Clearing Station, in the field on the 11/11/17. Admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne on the 15/11/17. To UK aboard SS. Princess Elizabeth on the 16/11/17. Posted to the Depot, Army Cyclist Corps on the 16/11/17. Granted furlough from the 4/1/18 – 14/1/18. Transferred to the Irish Command Depot at Kingston, on the 5/2/18. Posted to the Army Cyclist Corps Depot, Kingston on the 19/3/18. Posted to the 67th Depot Cyclist Company on the 22/3/18. Posted to the British Expeditionary Force 67th Divisional Cyclist Company at Fort Bentley on the 24/4/18. Embarked from Southampton to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 24/4/18. Disembarked Le Havre on the 25/4/18. Joined the Cyclist Brigade Depot at Rouen on the 27/4/18. Transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps, IX Cyclist Corps Battalion on the 8/5/18. Joined the Battalion in the field on the 11/5/18. Posted missing in action 27/5/18. Death presumed on the 27/5/18. Total service 3 years 268 days. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals. George’s surviving service documents are in poor condition, and much of the finer detail relating to the period of time that he spent in the Army, is either illegible or missing, hence the sparse overall description of his military and personal family history.
