ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of Mr and Mrs James Kettle. He was employed as a coal carter prior to enlisting. He embarked for France on the 27th July 1915, and on return from home leave in July 1916 was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was killed during a night attack on a German post at Epehy, he was shot in the heart and neck, when within a few yards of the post.
Source: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. George Kettle was one of 12 children born to James and Hannah Kettle. One of his older brothers, Herbert Kettle was killed in the war on 3/12/1916 and is remembered on the memorial at Thurlaston, Leics.
Following a period of leave in July 1916, George sent a postcard home to his parents before leaving for France. The family home was in Burley village, rather than Burley on the Hill (the stayely home), although this is the address that George wrote down. The post card was sent from London, and was marked 31st August 1916.
A copy of this postcard was was submitted by George's Great Nephew, M. Ward in 2020, and is transcribed below:

Dear Mother and Dad. I know you will feel it when you no [sic] I am gone out again, we left England last night but I hope it wont be long before I see you all again. Cheer up and look on the bright side, with love from George XXX I will write again as soon as I can.
M. Ward has also provided an extract of the War Diary of the 1/6th Bn, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, which details the action that Corporal George Kettle was involved in on the night he was killed, 16/04/1917 (O.R. 10K = Other Ranks, 10 killed).
George's parents both died in 1925 and are buried in the churchyard at Burley. The photograph of George was taken from page 43 of 'Rutland and the Great War' (George Phillips, 1920).
