He was the son of James Lucas, a general hawker, born 1848 in Arnesby, Leics., and his wife Mary Lucas (nee Robinson, married in the 4th quarter of 1883 in the Market Harborough, Leics. district), born 1862 in Glooston, Leics. Julius was born on the 21st August 1900 in Glooston, Leics., his siblings were, John, a farm carter, born 1885 in Slawston, Leics., Ada, born 1890, James, born 1892, Alfred, born 1897 and Henry, born 1898, the latter four siblings were all born in Glooston, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at the Fox and Hounds Inn, 35, Glooston Road, Market Harborough, Leics. In April 1911 Julius was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Glooston, Leics., together with his father, a hawker, his mother and siblings, John, a farm labourer, James, a farm labourer, Alfred, a farm labourer, Henry, a farm labourer and Herbert, born 1906 in Glooston, Leics., also residing with the family was his niece, Dorothy Hardy, born 1911 in Oadby, Leics. Julius enlisted into the Royal Air Force on the 22nd July 1918 for the duration of the war, and was allocated the service number 180864. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 8¾ inches in height, and he had a chest measurement of 39 inches. His complexion was described as fair, his hair colour was black and he had brown eyes. He gave his date and place of birth as the 21st August 1900 in Glooston, Leicestershire, his trade or calling as footman and his religion as Church of England. He gave his father, James Lucas of Glooston, Market Harborough, Leicestershire as his next of kin. His record of service began when he joined the Recruit Depot as a Private II on the 22/7/18 – 2/10/18 when he died from influenza/pneumonia in Shorncliffe Military Hospital.
