He was the son of William Merrin, a Police Detective Sergeant, born 1861 in Spondon, Derbys., and his wife, Mary Ann Merrin (nee Howe, married Q2 1883 in the Leicester district), born 1861 in Leicester. George Harry was born on the 29th May 1899 in Leicester, his siblings were, Maud Mary, a cardboard box maker, born 1885, Constance E., a schoolgirl, born 1890, Bertie William, a schoolboy, born 1895 and John, born 1897, all his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 56, Southampton Street, Leicester. In April 1911 George was a schoolboy and a part time outfitter’s boy, and was residing in the family home at 41, Southampton Street, Leicester, together with his widowed mother and siblings, Maud, a cardboard box maker, Bert, a kitchen cook and John, a printing boy. The family later resided at 59, Hartington Road, Spinney Hill, Leicester. George enlisted on the 24th July 1915 and embarked to join the Mediteranean Expeditionary Force as a Bomber on the 16th February 1916, joining his unit the Drake Battalion on the 28th February 1916, serving with this unit until the 5th July 1916, when he was attached to the 1st Royal Navy Brigade, Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was then posted to the 3rd Brigade, Light Trench Mortar Battery on the 8th July 1916 and served with that unit until he was killed in action on the 13th November 1916.
