He was the son of the late Arthur Norman, a shoe trade clicker, born 1867 in Oadby, Leics., and his wife Alice Norman (nee Shipley), a tobacconist and hairdressing shopkeeper, born 1868 in Wigston Magna, Leics. Edward (Edwin) Harold was born in 1893 in Oadby, Leics., his siblings were, Ethel, a hosiery trade sock machinist, born 1887 in Wigston Magna, Leics., Grace Evelyn, born 1896 in Oadby, Leics., and Arthur, born 1901 in Wigston Magna, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 10, Bell Street, Wigston Magna, Leics. In April 1911 Edward (Edwin) was employed as a hairdresser and was residing in the family home at Bell Street, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his widowed mother and siblings, Ethel, a hosiery trade seamer, Grace, a hosiery trade linker and Arthur, a schoolboy. In the third quarter of 1914 Edward married Grace Langton in the Blaby, Leicestershire marriage registration district. On Wednesday February 28th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR” - “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” – News has been received that Private E. H. Norman, of the Highland Light Infantry, was killed on February 3rd last. His wife lives at 60, Leicester Road, Wigston Magna. The Captain in command of his company writes; “ He was always an excellent soldier since I came to the company, and I very much regret his loss. At the time he was hit he was making a very dangerous journey with great cheerfulness.” On Wednesday March 7th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR” – (A photograph accompanied the article). Pte. S. H. Norman, killed Feb. 3. Wife lives at 60, Leicester Road, Wigston.
