He was the youngest son of Joseph Lester Putt and his wife Harriett, formerly of Rempstone, Notts. John was educated at Loughborough, and on leaving school was employed at a dairy farm. He enlisted in May 1916, and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from September 1916 until he was killed in action on the 29th April 1918. His Commanding Officer wrote, “He had done such splendid work out here as a driver, always brave and cool in time of danger. He was a gallant soldier.” And his Corporal wrote, “He was very willing and highly respected by all officers and men of the Battery.” John was unmarried.
