He was the son of Humphrey Burton a chapel caretaker, born 1854 in Leicester and his wife Ann Burton (nee Marriott, married on the 27th June 1875 in Christ Church, Leicester), born 1854 in Sileby, Leicestershire. Arthur was born in the 1st quarter of 1896 in Belgrave, Leicester, his siblings were, Annie Elizabeth, a shoe machinist, born 1879, Harriet, a shoe machinist, born 1882 and Humphrey, a shoe trade clicker, born 1884, the latter three siblings were all born in Leicester, William Henry, a market gardener, born 1886, Charles, born 24th March 1891 and George Marriot Burton, born 1899, the latter three siblings were all born in Belgrave, Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 98, Newington Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a printing engineer and was residing in the family home at 169, Loughborough Road, Leicester, together with his father, a market gardener, his mother who was assisting in the business, and his siblings, Charles, a skin dresser and George, a schoolboy. Arthur also had an older brother, Robert Edward Burton, born 1877 in Leicester. Arthur’s father died in December 1928 in Leicester, aged 75, and his mother died in November 1935, aged 81.
Arthur enlisted/attested into the Territorial Force Reserve on the 26th September 1914 in Leicester, and was allotted the service number 2996. He gave his present address as 4, Vann Street, Belgrave, Leicester.
His medical examination took place in Leicester on the 21st September 1914 and recorded his apparent age as 19 years 270 days, that he was 5 feet 8 inches in height, had a chest measurement of between 32 and 33½ inches and his physical development was described as fair.
He gave his next of kin as his father, Humphrey Burton, 4, Vann Street, Leicester.

The War Diary records: 24 Jul-15 - At 7.00am situation quiet. Wind gentle South Westerly. At 9.15pm crater made by enemy’s mine immediately in front of trench 50 was occupied by 4th and 5th LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. A working party began to put crater into state of defence, joining same to North end of trench 49 by deepening old trench running parallel to South end of trench 50 (for details see attached). Casualties, other ranks 1 man killed and 16 men wounded.
The War Diary records: 25 Jul-15 - At 2.10am enemy threw time fuse trench mortar bomb into crater, it was followed by two more which fell short. At 7.00am situation quiet. Wind Westerly. At 3.00pm enemy shelled North end of 49 trench and immediate vicinity to Headquarters. (Whizz bangs). At 9.00pm working party carried on work begun on previous night in crater and forward trench. Casualties, other ranks 3 men wounded.
On Wednesday August 4th 1915, The Leicester Journal published the following article under the heading. “LEICESTERSHIRE AND THE WAR.” – ROLL OF HONOUR. - Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey Burton, of 4, Vann-street, Belgrave, have been notified that their son, Lance-Corporal ARTHUR BURTON (2996), C Company, 1/4th Leicester’s, was killed on the night of July 24-25. They have received a letter of sympathy from Captain L. Corah, commanding the company, in which the officer said he valued the deceased as a promising and willing non-commissioned officer. Burton who was 19 years of age, was educated at Mellor-street School, and before enlisting last October was in the employ of Mr. Fokrnall, Blake-street. He went to the front in April. His brother, Private Charles Burton is serving with Strathcona’s Horse, having come over with the first Canadian contingent.
