He was the son of William Horner a shoe trade foreman laster, born 1867 in Belgrave, Leicester and his wife Fanny Elizabeth Horner (nee Spencer), born 1867 in Leicester. Thomas William was born in 1891 in Belgrave, Leicester, his siblings were, Bertram Edwin, born 1893 and Gladys M., born 1896, both his siblings were born in Belgrave, Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 5, Gipsy Road, Leicester. His younger brother Bertram Edwin also fell. The War Diary for the 4th July 1916 records. Heavy rains from night of the 3rd instant, trenches in a terrible state. The entry for the 7th – 9th July 1916 record. Cylinders of gas carried up to the front line preparatory to giving the enemy a dose of gas without an attack.
