He was the son of William Radford, a boot trade warehouseman, born 1855 in Mansfield, Notts., and his wife Mary Jane Radford (nee Perkins, married q2 1878 in the Leicester district), born 1856 in Leicester. Ernest James was born in q3 1891 in Leicester, his siblings were, Frank W., a boot trade warehouseman, born 1879, Ada Louisa, a tailoress, born 1886 and Harry Perkins, born 1888, all his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 33, Coventry Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Ernest was employed as a hosiery manufacturer’s clerk and was residing in the family home at 113, Bismarck Street, Leicester, together with his father, a boot manufacturers examiner, his mother and siblings, Harry, a brass foundry clerk and Ada, a hosiery trade machinist.
